Message from the Head of Department,

Design

Whenever we dive into the process of creation, one of the core objectives and questions that come up is “What can I change?”. The change in question is not an abstract hypothesis but a very material outcome envisioned and honed through the process of research, iteration and then execution. That change, is in essence – birth.

I suppose the question then becomes “What can I create?” and thus, the line of questioning and it’s expected response begins anew. We arrive at an apparent conclusion only to be faced with a million more questions and choices that need to be made in order to realize the vision we set out to achieve.

The 24 projects on display in this unique Degree Show exhibition are visions by our students that have gone through innumerable choices to arrive where they are. These theses have the absolute potential to not just respond to the question I posed at the beginning of this note, they have the capacity to reach much further – they raise and respond to questions beyond the immediate scope of what they are. Such is the ambition that brings about change not on the level of an individual, but through to the collective.

All said and done, our students and instructors are not just originating new ideas, but also new ways of thinking, execution and application. Through each project, among other questions, choices and responses, you can hear echoes and whispers asking “What have I changed?”
